Roger--the metallic contamination, as JD calls it, came from not cleaning out the millings from the machining of one of the castings. It is my belief that my tractor was NOT unique in this issue. Did JD notify owners or recall 4200+ tractors that might have had metallic contamination, bad front end, etc.--of course not. BUT, thanks to a very supportive dealer and six trips of my 4400 back to the dealer for JD authorized warranty repairs and upgrades, it received a new transmission, new brakes, new PTO, new transmission site glass, new dash glass, new front end, and all of the upgrades (mostly linkages)that were available. Now, for the first time in the 19 months of its ownership, it is fully operating as it should. I doubt if Eric's metal shavings are related to the metallic contamination that has been found in 4200+ tractors since his 4100 was manufactured in Japan where they probably were smart enough to thoroughly flush out the castings before assembling them. ALSO, I have never seen any postings on any of the three tractor forums about anyone with a 4100 having transmission failures due to metallic contamination. BTW--when my tractor was beginning to have transmission problems at about 40 hours, I was notified by my dealer that a DTAC bulletin was issued which recommended a transmission filter and fluid change to be performed at 50 hours instead of what was listed in the manual, and the transmission filter on the hydros was twice the size of the original--so JD was aware of the metallic contamination issue on the 4200+ tractors. Jim--thanks for your advice. Your reasoning is exactly why I currently use a 60 inch belly mower, but have become disenchanted with my JD4400 with its engineering and quality control issues (even though they have been corrected) and the only other tractor out there that really catches my eye is the Boomer TC35 or 40D and I do have deep reservations about its size and the size of its only belly mower. Jerry--for you to change filters, transmission fluid, oil, etc. would take about an hour and cost you, in materials, about $125 if you use all JD labeled products--yet your wording leads me to wonder IF the hydraulic fluid was going to be changed along with its filter (both of those are about $110 of the $125 I mentioned above). I also wonder about adjusting hydraulic valves--do not understand this part--I don't recall anything in my manual about adjusting hydraulic valves (hope this service isn't found under the heading of floobie dust;-) Mike S.

Roger--First some comments about my JD430 loader with HD bucket: It has excellent construction and operation and while I may have some issues with the tractor it is mounted on, I have been impressed with this FEL. It takes under five minutes to remove it and slightly longer to mount it and its capabilities, including breakout force, is excellent for its size. Another advantage to the 430 is being able to pull 2 pins to remove the bucket and within a couple of minutes, mount the front forks. The only minor irritant is when I am turned around in the seat watching a rear implement and I often accidentally move the joystick. Second, I have examined, but not actually used a New Holland 16LA FEL because I have an interest in purchasing a TC35D. The hood and loader are sloped in such a way as to give a better view of the bucket when it is on the ground and its mounting to the tractor seems very substantial. BUT, the bucket itself does not easily detach and it would have been a better design IMHO had the Boomer engineers designed the bucket to be quickly detached using the same hookup as the NH Skidloaders so their attachments would fit (believe some of the Ford-NH tractors' FELs do so and actually use NH skidloader attachments). As I consider moving up to a TC35D and a quality rear mount/rear discharge mower, I am wondering whether its large R-3's or R-4's would mash the grass the least before the mower mows the grass.<br>

As I consider moving up to a TC35D, I am surprised that the bucket on the 16A FEL is not a quick-attach style, so that forks or other attachments could be easily used b esides the bucket. Does anyone know if there are any NH plans to modify the 16A/17A FELs to have quick-attached buckets and that would also use some of the same attachments as the NH Skidloaders?

Jim--thanks for the clarification. You make a good point that most of the larger compact diesel tractors would not sell as well with belly mowers when they are used. Two different local dealers (for different brands of tractors) commented that they will typically sell one of the larger compact diesels with a belly mower for every 50 or so that they sell with a rear mower with a brand different than that of the tractor. I am used to the convenience of a belly mower, having had one on each of the compact diesel tractors that I have owned (currently I have a JD4400HST with 60 inch commercial belly mower). Consideration is being given to moving up to a Boomer TC35D with a 7 ft. rear finish mower (Rhino, Woods or Bushog). QUESTION:is a rear finish mower practical for me after 20 years of using belly mowers--I mow around 50 trees and other objects in my small acreage of a yard. Opinions? Mike S.

Although I just removed the snow from a mile and a half of paved county road by using my rear blade facing forward and angled to the side, this method would however, remove the gravel from my driveway. Jim's idea of using the back of the blade on a gravel driveway works pretty well--if you don't mind backing the tractor a long distance. Regarding skid shoes: When I had a hydraulic front blade with skid shoes, I set the shoes at a depth of 4 inches and made one pass down the middle of my driveway and removed the snow AND almost two inches of gravel and deposited it on the other side of the county road--the gravel was not frozen and the skid shoes simply sunk in. My vote (no pregnant chad either) is to back the tractor and push the snow with the back of the rear blade. Mike S.

My 3rd SCV controls the cylinder used to raise and lower my belly mower. Would it be possible to use the 3rd SCV hydraulic connectors at the back of my 4400 Deere to attach to a hydraulic top link on my 3 pt? (assuming I would first disconnect the hydraulic lines to the belly mower's cylinder) Would I need any additional hardware except for the hydraulic lines and cylinder? Mike S.

Mark--the TC40D is a lot more tractor in all aspects than a JD4400 and if it is only $1000 more, then it is also a better value. One small down side in favor of the 4400 is that it is possible to pull two pins and remove the bucket from the FEL and within three minutes add front forks and/or bale spike whereas removal of the bucket on the TC40D FEL would take some time and effort.

John--after getting my bifocals focused right, I found two fittings under the tractor on the hydro pedal shaft--one on a two inch long stalk and also a regular fitting. Also, I found that the little roller bearing a few inches above the grease fittings was dragging against the top of the cam-like lever when the forward pedal was depressed whereas the same roller bearing would not drag against the bottom of the cam-like lever (sorry about this poor description), so I shot it with some CRC lubricant and it seemed to free up the forward pedal and also seemed to allow the pedal to come up when removing my foot. While checking out the hydro pedal linkages, I noticed that the rubber boot that surrounds what appears to be a 6 inch long gas-filled strut (keeps the hydro pedal from instantly jumping back up) had come loose which would allow dirt and water to enter and perhaps cause problems later. These observations are from memory since my tractor is at the dealership getting some linkage upgrades. Mike S.

Hillbilly--having read this forum for a year and a half (as long as I have owned by JD4400HST), it has been apparent that a number of dealers have been unaware of this scuffing problem with the front axle. Yet, their tech support (DTAC) has issued a solution bulletin on the subject and some dealers have been to meetings in regard to the lawn scuffing problem. It has been alleged on this forum that JD dealers get a yearly bonus based upon a low warranty service record and only JD dealers and their franchise owners know if this is true or not. If my dealer was aware of the front axle scuffing problem, then I would assume that all JD compact tractor dealers should have known about it. It is my understanding that in order to obtain an upgraded front end (everything between the wheels and the tractor frame, plus a new powersteering pump), it is a fix as fails situation, meaning that the person must make a formal warranty complaint and also that particular tractor must have a JD belly mower. I had no difficulty in getting the front end on my 4400 replaced (along with the brakes, transmission, PTO, dash glass and some PIP upgraded linkages). I will disagree that if you don't have a mower that it is not an issue since the trade-in value or resale value will probably be higher on your tractor if it has the upgraded front end--at least there have been a couple of postings on this forum to that effect. kay--thanks for your detailed description of how you mounted the Western snowplow to your tractor--some great ingenuity. In fact, this appears to mount up easier than the OEM JD hydraulic front blade on my JD955. There are usually a number of Western snow plows for sale in the spring. Thanks for your heads up. Mike S.

Hillbilly--I notice that a number of farmers near me use "carryalls" on their 3-pts to carry chainsaws, etc. While it is possible to make your own carryall for your own needs, Tractor Supply (TSC) (www.tractorsupply.com) sells some lightweight carryalls that might satisfy your needs and they also carry tractor radios, lights, etc. It would be possible to modify a carryall and cut it shorter to accomodate just a compact pickup toolbox, for example. Before my 4400 and its FEL, I found the ideal carryall for chainsaw, tools, etc. to be my 3-pt. rear scoop--worked wonderful. Mike S.

Eddie--Would it be possible to flip the foldable ROPS (with the canopy attached) on your 4300 back over with the canopy ending up upside down and sticking out behind the tractor?? I ask this because I must fold my ROPS down in order to get the tractor in its garage. Also--is there a Web site for the manufacturer of these canopies? Thanks... Mike S.

Mike--I well remember our conversations and am sorry to hear of your transmission problems, but can well relate to the freewheeling. The replacement transmission has been fantastic. When my 4400 works right, it is an awesome tractor, but I am thinking about a different tractor even though it appears that all problems with my tractor have finally been resolved. My psychology is such that I prefer to own products in which I can take pride because of their superior workmanship and dependability and freedom from repairs. I take tremendous pride in having owned a Yanmar, two Kubotas and a JD955--they all served me well and were trouble-free. But even though my 4400 looks like new and now runs like new, I was robbed by JD of the pride of ownership because of their poor quality control. A person should not have to spend a year and a half experiencing difficulties, anxiety and frustrations as a result even though it was beyond their control. I happened to look at a TC35D with FEL and liked the looks and feel even though it has the capabilities of my 4400, but the size of a 4500. Unfortunatley, the TC35D is probably too big for my needs. Rumor has it that JD will scrap the current line of 4x00 tractors in two more years with replacements in a 4x10 line--were I to want another JD, which is unlikely, I don't think I will be one of the first in line this time.
